Rebecca Lucy Taylor and Jake Shears to star in West End production of Cabaret

Self Esteem - aka Rebecca Lucy Taylor - and Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters will take over the principle roles in the West End production of Cabaret next month.

Stepping into the lead roles of Sally Bowles and the Emcee from Monday 25 September 2023 until Saturday 20 January 2024, the pair follow in the footsteps of Maude Apatow and Mason Alexander Park who are currently performing in the production.

"I’ve never made a secret of my love of theatre and I couldn’t be more excited about getting to make my stage debut as one of the greatest leads of all time,” Taylor said. “I’ve joked for years that there is no need for a Self Esteem musical because Sally’s story covers most of the points. I am artistically and emotionally raring to take on this challenge.”

The London revival of the classic musical opened in 2012 with Jessie Buckley and Eddie Redmayne winning acclaim for their performances. It led the 2022 Olivier Award nominations with 11 nods, including Best Musical Revival, Best Actor in a Musical for Redmayne and Best Actress in a Musical for Buckley – eventually winning 7 awards and setting a record for being the most award-winning revival in Olivier history, as well for being the first production to obtain awards in all 4 eligible acting categories.

Taylor composed the music for Jodie Comer's Prima Facie and has previously appeared in the theatre as a fairy in a 2017 pantomime performance of Jack and the Beanstalk – an experience of which she commented, "[I] was seriously shocked that they gave a shit if I couldn't perform. There was a person employed to give a shit & sort it out- the health of you and your vocal was taken seriously. Touring music industry just expect you to drink wine and get on with it."

Shears has appeared in the likes of Kinky Boots on Broadway and in LA. He also wrote the lyrics for the musical Tammy Faye in in 2022.

Tickets are available online now for Cabaret, which takes place at the Playhouse theatre.
