Governors Ball 2017: Five To See

(News)

With the 7th annual Governors Ball music festival less than a week away, we help you narrow down the acts you need to catch this year on Randall's Island.

Of the big names, Friday night will see Chance the Rapper take to the Gov Ball stage for what will be the must-see event of the three days. Phoenix are returning to debut new material from upcoming album Ti Amo on the Gov Ball stage on Saturday. At the same time, Danny Glover will be at the Honda stage - the young Lando Calrissian set to don his Childish Gambino pseudonym once again to perform songs from the standout Awaken, My Love. Even before the official announcement, the internet was alight with rumours of Tool's appearance. Maynard Keenan and co. will be dishing out their alt-metal hits on the Gov Ball stage while Wiz Khalifa will no doubt help close the festival on a high at the Honda Stage on Sunday night.

Aside from these headliners, there are over 60 other acts to choose from across the festival. The official schedule can be found on Governors Ball official app. With so much talent over the three days, here are our top 5 picks to catch:

Lorde

While the initial line-up poster suggested Lorde would be the alternative headliner to Chance on Friday, we were ecstatic to find out the scheduling placed her at a different time. Lorde returned to stage at Coachella earlier this year to rave reviews. Building on that experience, there is no doubt she will be delivering an amazing set. The setlist is likely to include hits from Pure Heroine as well as new material from the upcoming Melodrama on Gov Ball stage on Friday. Expect Jack Antonoff, who co-wrote the songs on Melodrama to join her on stage as Bleachers are playing a set earlier that day.

Skepta / Stormzy

Governors Ball has always welcomed acts both new and established from the UK and this year the Brits represent big time with outings from the likes of Dua Lipa, Franz Ferdinand, Blossoms and Royal Blood. By no means, all these artists deserve to be seen but there are two unmissable acts. Skepta and Stormzy are two of the hottest grime acts who have been integral in reviving the genre. It would be impossible to choose one over the other. Make sure to catch Skepta Shutdown the Bacardi stage on Sunday and watch Stormzy makes the doubters Shut Up on Honda stage on Saturday.

Air

What can be more glorious than listening to the best of French electronica on a warm and breezy summer evening (weather don't fail us this year please)? With their compilation album TwentyYears reminding us all how influential they were with songs like "SexyBoy" and "Kelly Watch the Stars", Air will be bringing their Twentyyears tour to New York after 7 years of absence from the festival. Grab a cool drink and make your way to Bacardi stage to catch them live on Sunday evening.

Charli XCX

Charli's Number 1 Angel is possibly the best euphoric mixtape to come out this side of Atlantic this year. Having wrapped a short promo tour that included dates in SF, New York, London and Paris last month, she will be returning to Governors Ball to (possibly) perform the entire album as she did on the promo tour. Having witnessed her London show we can guarantee this will be nothing short of massive. If you want to dance like crazy, or just go crazy, there is no better act to do it so with than Charli. She will be playing the Big Apple Stage on Friday.

Wu-Tang Clan

Our last pick is a legendary one and therefore not to be missed. The New York City's own Wu-Tang Clan gave the blueprint of a hip-hop collective to the world and their influence on current and previous headliners of Governors Ball is in no doubt. The crew is expected to perform the c.r.e.a.m of the cream of hip-hop and rap covering three decades of collective and individual output. Last time we caught Wu-Tang on stage, we were showered in champagne. This time around we are bringing an empty glass to fill it and raise it in their honour while shouting WUUUU TANG in unison. WTC plays the Gov Ball stage on Saturday.

Very limited 3-day, Saturday VIP & Sunday tickets are available on the official Governors Ball website.
