Post Common reveal plans for self-titled debut EP

Brighton trio Post Common have announced their first EP, Post Common, and shared lead single, “Space/Time”.

Formed by current and former members of JOHN, TRAAMS, and Sisterland, Post Common — Stuart Hopkins (guitar/vocals), Ian Humes (bass) and John Newton (drums/vocals) — will release their first collection of songs in November, with Space/Time” offering the first glimpse.

The band came together after Hopkins moved back to Brighton and he and Newton bonded over a shared love of DIY punk rock, particularly Dischord Records, and an interest in playing with industrial and electronic elements inspired by New York duo Suicide. Humes joined on bass after befriending Newton at a record shop.

"This was the first experiment of me writing lyrics and Stu mangling them in his own way," Newton says. "It's a really good illustration of that exquisite corpse process. A lot of drum pads and electronic stuff; a deliberate attempt to play around and challenge more traditional instrumentation."

The band recorded the EP at The Bookhouse in South London with engineer Tom Hill. Reflecting on the process, Hoxton shares: "Sometimes we collaborate, and sometimes we write separately. John's more dystopian and industrial, like he's Bauhaus, while I'm personal. If he's brutalist, I'm more introspective — if he's the outside of the house, I'm the inside."
