Portraits of Tracy channels nostalgia with new EP, Q: From Where Do Our Primal Instincts Originate A: MTV!
Baton Rouge producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Portraits of Tracy has announced her upcoming EP, Q: From Where Do Our Primal Instincts Originate A: MTV!, and shared retrofuturistic single "Caught In A Jam".
Q: From Where Do Our Primal Instincts Originate A: MTV! follows Portrait of Tracy's 2023 concept album Drive Home: Parting Gifts, which chronicled her journey in accepting herself as transgender and finding her voice as a Black, queer teen raised in Baton Rouge with elements of classic rock, hip-hop, R&B, soul, and psychedelic indie rock.
The EP draws on childhood memories of DC hardcore and MTV, with "Caught In A Jam" arriving as the first preview as an experimental, synth-driven track. “Caught In A Jam Is a brash love letter to bands such as: Squeeze, Gary Numan, Tom Tom Club & Queen," Portraits of Tracy explains of the single. "Space age obsession meets the sound and the urgency of the late 70s."
Discussing the influences behind the EP, Portraits of Tracy adds: “Q: From Where Do Our Primal Instincts Originate? A: MTV! is a loud and playful glimpse into who I am as a person and a musician. Drawing from acts like Stereolab & The Beach Boys... to Dead Kennedys & Dag Nasty… you know it’s bound to be a fun time.”
