Philadelphia "hawk 'n roll" artist Mallory Hawk announces debut LP Chinook and shares lead single “Revolver”
Philadelphia-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mallory Hawk has confirmed details of her debut record Chinook, due end of July, and shared the lead single “Revolver”.
The LP takes its title from the Chinook CH-47 helicopter, a sound Hawk grew up with in Fayetteville, North Carolina, a military town. She draws an analogy between the aircraft’s dual-propeller construction – capable of colliding with itself – and her own tendency toward self-sacrifice. “Even when I was down to the last bit of fuel in my reserve tank, I’d still give away every last drop to nurture and care for others,” she recalls. “Routinely channelling my anger into song made me realise that my self-sacrifice had to stop.”
The video for the elad single, shot in her living room while
dog-sitting, pays homage to Alanis Morissette’s “You Learn” clip and
features a rotating camera setup.
Chinook was produced by Sam Acchione (Alex G, Jessica Lea Mayfield) and tracked at Headroom Studios in Philadelphia. Hawk contributed bass, drum machine, organ and guitars, while Acchione brought in unexpected overdubs including flugelhorn and djembe. The record features contributions from Craig Hendrix (Japanese Breakfast), Logan Roth and others.
The album’s nine tracks trace Hawk’s movement between her Southern childhood and adult life in Boston, New York and now Philadelphia. Songs such as “D’Anger” and “Caretaker” address exhausting relationships and the desire for respite, while “Low Rise” explores teenage repression under heteronormative Christianity. “Four O’Clocks” mourns the demolition of her childhood home to make way for a highway.
Hawk previously released a double single in 2024, “All Your Troubles / Run Until They Catch You”.
