Pet Fox return with first new album in four years, Balance
Boston trio Pet Fox have announced their upcoming album, Balance, and shared the title track.
Pet Fox consists of singer Theo Hartlett — who also plays drums in Ovlov and has served as touring guitarist for Gouge Away — bassist Morgan Luzzi, and drummer Jesse Weiss.
Balance follows Pet Fox's 2022 album A Face In Your Life. It was recorded over seven days at Asheville's Drop of Sun Studios with producer Alex Farrar (Wednesday, MJ Lenderman, Squirrel Flower), with title track and album opener "Balance" offering the first preview of the new work.
"The idea behind this song is impulsivity caused by anxiety and/or frustration," explains singer . "Being able to think things through before acting on something is important, and fighting the balance of impulsivity versus indecision is something I've struggled with all of my life."
Balance is the band's first fully studio-produced album after years of largely self-producing, and was mainly recorded live. The songs were written and demoed between autumn 2023 and spring 2024 in their Boston rehearsal space, with Pinback, Autolux and Alex G cited as inspirations.
The album's title explores the challenge of learning to care for yourself without losing sight of the people around you, touching on the experience of learning how to overcome people-pleasing tendencies and the pressure to meet outside expectations.
