Oisin Mod announces Bill Ryder-Jones-produced album, Canary

Canary follows Mod's 2022 debut Honeycomb, which was also produced by Ryder-Jones — previously the guitarist of The Coral — with title track "Canary" expanding on the mood of the album. To capture its isolated, nocturnal feel, Mod spent a month holed up in a rundown house in West Cork to write the song.

"Jagged thought processes were a big part of where these songs came from," he recalls. "Being disillusioned and feeling like a cynic and maybe becoming not so easy to be around yourself. That's the sort of world that a lot of it came from."

While exploring his own internal psychogeography, Mod also recalls watching Twin Peaks and David Lynch films, reading John Healy's memoir The Grass Arena and listening to Rowland S. Howard's Pop Crimes. "Consuming that sort of stuff definitely informed the record," he says.

While Canary is formed of more full-bodied arrangements – Ryder-Jones urged Mod to make a record "with a pair of shoulders" – the album was finished in just twelve days with drummer Phil Murphy. "Recording with Bill just works," Mod notes. "We have a shared vernacular and there's an understanding of our work dynamic."

Ryder-Jones adds: "I'm a fan of his writing. He has a way with words that is very unique to him, and that counts for so much. It's actually really easy to work with Oisin."
