NYC lo-fi punk outfit Balaclava announce debut album, MONEY GLITCH

MONEY GLITCH follows BALACLAVA's previous EPs HAVE A TASTE, released in 2022, and THE ¼ INCH ALMANAC, released in 2024. The eleven-track collection is described as twenty-eight minutes of "new wave-infused lo-fi punk" against singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jonathan Dylan Joyce's musings on depression, addiction, escapism, morality and spirituality, with "WHAT A REGULAR DAY" landing as the first preview.

The album follows previous EPs was recorded by Joyce alone in his basement, with Steve Salerno and Hector Guillen adding drums and percussion, and J Malzone making a cameo on synthesizer. It was mixed by Joey Distasio, mastered by Greg Obis and features artwork by Jackson Glover.

Every song was written during a month long songwriting marathon. "Every day during the month of August 2023, I wrote and recorded a song. One day. One song," Joyce explains. "Out of those songs came the MONEY GLITCH record. With limited time each day, these songs did not have the space to dwell or churn into something they never were. In response to that limitation, each track became the expression of an exact moment in time."

The process was "honestly shit and took way too long," he adds. "I started out on my Tascam 388, recording to tape for the first few songs, but that shit the bed right from the beginning. I'm still really bummed I didn't get to use the tape machine for the full album, but here we are. Real DIY shit. Real lack of knowledge on most aspects of recording this album. But I don't think it would be BALA if it was any other way."
