Watch Nanna perform "Godzilla" live in session for The Line of Best Fit
Of Monsters and Men vocalist and guitarist Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir teamed up with Best Fit and our friends at Record in Iceland for a session filmed during Iceland Airwaves last year.
Along with Nanna’s friend (and a rising star of Icelandic music) Rakel Sigurðardóttir, we hit the headquarters of INNI in downtown Reykjavík. Formed in 2019 INNI is an independent music company that represents some of the world’s finest composers and writers – among them co-founder Atli Örvarsson, BAFTA-nominated this week for his work on Apple TV's Silo. Primarily a publishing company, INNI also works as an independent record label and music production house.
For her Best Fit session, Nanna and Rakel performed “Godzilla” – her first solo single, taken from last year’s How to Start A Garden. “The song came about while I was trying to make sense of change,” explains Nanna. “It’s about the in-between state of an old life and a new one. It was written in the pandemic when i had lots of time to work on my music and be alone and play around. The song became a bit of an anchor for me in that time. It makes me think back on Icelandic summer nights, when you are tired but the sun is still up and the surreal feeling that comes with it. ”
“Singing with me is my friend and musician Rakel Sigurðardóttir. She makes beautiful music on her own. She is also a part of my touring band and opened for me on my Europe dates last fall. “
Record in Iceland is a refund programme offered by Iceland’s Ministry of Culture and Business Affairs that gives anyone who records their music in Iceland a 25% refund on all recording costs incurred in Iceland.
