Moses Sumney and Joseph Shirley join forces for IS GOD IS soundtrack
Moses Sumney and composer Joseph Shirley have announced their collaboration on the original soundtrack for IS GOD IS, and released new song “Sins of the Father" featuring singer-songwriter Kara Jackson.
IS GOD IS is Aleshea Harris' directorial debut, which is in theatres now, and follows the story of twin sisters, Racine (Kara Young) and Anaia (Mallori Johnson), who set out to complete their birth mother's (Vivica A. Fox) dying wish, to avenge her and kill their father, “Man” (Sterling K. Brown).
Sumney and Shirley have come together to create a soundtrack that draws from American blues, rock, and experimental sound, inspired by Southern Gothic themes and Greek tragedy. "Sins of the Father" arrives as the first preview of the 19-track album.
Discussing the experience of scoring his first feature film, Sumney shares, “It was an honor to co-compose Aleshea Harris’s IS GOD IS with Joe Shirley. I learned so much about the power of music to bolster a cinematic story.”
“Working with Moses Sumney on the songs and score of this film was an utterly captivating and life-affirming creative experience for me," Shirley adds. "His connection to music is so intuitive, mythic yet still very tactile and progressive. We explored many genres and moods together, in helping shape Aleshea Harris’ poignant story on the twins’ journey into the belly of the beast. An honor to work alongside him, and to work on this film with Aleshea, is an understatement.”
