Melanie Baker finds liberation through humour on new single, "HAHA!"

04 March 2026, 10:37 | Written by Kayla Sandiford

Newcastle slacker pop artist Melanie Baker has shared "HAHA!", the latest preview of her upcoming debut album, Somebody Help Me, I'm Being Spontaneous!.

The new single follows lead singles "Sad Clown" and "Bored" as the latest preview of Baker's grunge, glam, riot grrrl and indie rock-inspired debut. On the track, she laughs at the idea of expectations, finding freedom in rejecting social norms.

Discussing the single, Baker explains: “I’m not trying to be liked anymore. This song is literally me laughing in the face of my oppressor. It’s a middle finger to anyone who tries to deny you the right to be yourself. I’ve found so much freedom and liberation in allowing myself to be silly and have fun again despite living in a world that still doesn’t want to accept Queer joy.

"I’ve found freedom in rejecting capitalism in the small ways I can and living MY life on MY own terms. I started letting myself be messy and sad and feel things. I stopped trying to be big and brave and strong all the time. I stopped masking my own emotions, anxieties and let myself feel fully. Suddenly after many years of not knowing who I was, I felt like I was looking in the mirror and seeing myself for the first time."

Somebody Help Me, I'm Being Spontaneous! is released on 10 April via Tambourhinoceros
