Max Subar signs to Merge and announces debut album, Anything Could Be
Chicago singer-songwriter Max Subar has announced his signing to Merge Records, his upcoming debut album, Anything Could Be, and released the album's title track.
As the newest addition to Merge Records, Subar joins the likes of Friendship, Waxahatchee, and more, with Anything Could Be being his debut solo collection of songs and his first full-length release on the label. "Anything Could Be" arrives as the first preview of the album, and offers an exploration of growth for the arrtist.
Speaking about the single, Subar explains: "This song is about waking up to life and its offerings. How choosing curiosity can spark growth, meaning and a sense of possibility when we’re left feeling stagnant or lost. I hope it’s a beacon for others, a reminder during trying times that anything could really be.
"When I was a kid, my friend and I would sneak onto a nearby golf course late at night just to fish in a pond with headlamps on," he continues. "There was pure discovery in it, no expectations, lots of patience, and content in that time spent, regardless of the outcome. Life for me has continued to feel better as I learn to live this way. That's a lot of what this record is about, too."
Anything Could Be was recorded across ten days of solitude, but featured additional sessions with his brother Sam Subar on drums, Case Oats bandmates Spencer Tweedy (additional drums),Jason Ashworth (upright bass), and Scott Daniel (violin), as well as frequent collaborators Chet Zenor (electric guitar), Kelly Hannemann (piano), and Sarah Weddle (vibraphone, organ, and electric piano).
Discussing the process, Subar explains: “There is so much room for newness in the weightiest or seemingly most paralyzing of times. No matter how foreign, frightening, anxiety-ridden, or unfamiliar chapters of life can feel, there is always an opportunity to tap deep into ourselves and land somewhere new, somewhere forward."
