Matty Healy "apologises" for Ice Spice comments

21 April 2023, 18:22 | Written by Tyler Damara Kelly

The comments were made after Healy admitted to sliding into Ice Spice's DMs.

During an appearance on The Adam Friedland Show – which has been removed from Spotify and Apple Music – Healy, Friedland, and Nick Mullen made derogatory comments about the rapper and mocked Chinese and Hawaiian accents, whilst they speculated about her ethnicity.

Months later, at The 1975's show in Auckland, New Zealand, Healy issues an apology which doesn't feel entirely genuine – more that he's embarrassed to have been called out for yet another slip up because people have "misconstrued" his jokes as "being mean".

“Ice Spice, I’m sorry. It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued. It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a dick. I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry," he said in footage captured at the show.

"I feel like I’ve been a bit irresponsible,” he continues. “It’s very well for me to say, 'I don’t understand how famous I am. I don’t like being famous.' But reality is reality. And I think that I’ve said some things or kind of, I make a joke out of everything. That’s my thing. And I can take it too far sometimes in front of too many people. And I feel a bit embarrassed. So that’s the truth.”

Further in the apology, he continues: "I'm making jokes about shit because if I don't, then I have to be really sincere and I don't like doing that. I know this is a paradoz but this is really freaking me out and I feel like I need to do this. I am a little bit sorry about shit that I've said – sometimes. I've never meant to hurt anybody, so I just feel a bit bad".

The controversy sparked a rift between The 1975 frontman and Yungblud after he commented on the matter.

The 1975 will release a live performance with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra on vinyl for the first time for this year’s Record Store Day (22 April).
