Marina Herlop reveals plans for new album, Dja Dja
Catalan composer, vocalist and pianist Marina Herlop has announced her new album, Dja Dja, and shared lead single, "Jaque".
Dja Dja is described by Herlop as "a giant sudoku". The collection of songs follow the framework of the hero's journey, following the artist as she embarks on her own personal quest through reflection and creative struggle. "Jaque" arrives as the first glimpse into her vision.
Dja Dja was made by Herlop in her own home, and will also be her first self-release. The process involved her referring to a cardboard diagram in her studio which mapped out her plans for harmony, instrumentation, tempo and meter.
Describing the experience as "subordinating herself to the music rather than commanding it", Herlop also invited her close friend and collaborator Adri González (Adri Goor) to advise her on musical decisions, and in addition to laying down her own core instrumentals, she recorded Gamelan parts in Bali with local musicians, and incorporated orchestral bass for the songs to fully take shape.
