Manitoba indie pop duo sundayclub detail debut LP alongside lead single
The rising Canadian dream poppers, A&R'd by ex-Weakerthans guitarist, have announced their self-titled debut record, due 10 July via Paper Bag Records, and released its first single, "Camera Shy".
The nine-track LP was put together in rural Manitoba, where the pair began writing as a way of processing early adulthood. Alvvays’ Blue Rev and Beabadoobee’s Space Cadet EP were reference points, but the band say the finished record sounds like something they couldn’t find elsewhere. The duo cite comparisons to Slowdive, Soccer Mommy, and The 1975, with each track intended as “a blurry photograph, grainy but glowing”.
The album's lead single, which the band describe as the “quintessential sundayclub song”, is set across a hazy New Year’s Eve, orbiting what the duo call “the compulsion to document and be documented versus the desire to simply disappear into a moment”.
The
song also contains an unscripted moment captured mid-session after
nearly a year in the studio: a pitched-down adlib of “Are you like
okay?” that made the final cut. The band add: “It’s about a good night
gone very wrong — one of those back and forth, hazy NYE nights bound for
absolute disaster. It references our obsession with the ‘moment’ and
ever-present FOMO, but also introduces Court’s complicated feelings
towards being photographed or ‘captured’.”
sundayclub have a run of UK shows ahead, including a slot at The Great Escape in May.
