Liz Harris details new album, Music For Two Films About Water
Liz Harris has announced her upcoming project, Music For Two Films About Water, which contains two scores for short films by Tanja Engelberts and Takashi Makino.
Each film is an exploration of water, though each soundtrack varies in the way that this theme is translated. Harris creates a backdrop formed by layers of mellotron, tape loops, Wurlitzer and field recordings.
The first piece, "Untitled (from We Exhale)", was originally composed for Engelberts' film We Exhale. In the film, Engelberts takes the perspective of the river itself, tracing how centuries of damming, channelling and industrial pollution have reduced the Rhône from a living landscape to a hydraulic object. The work asks what a poisoned river sounds like when it exhales, considering the extent of damage that persists even beyond human lifetimes.
The second composition, "Untitled (from Constellation)", soundtracks a project by Makino titled Constellation, a collection of works exploring how new meanings emerge through the arrangement of memories and fragments using abstract images of water textures. The piece is inspired by the way ancient people created narratives out of star mapping, inviting viewers to consider their own relationships between images.
