"I barely scratched the surface": Listen to David Byrne's Latin psychedelia playlist

03 May 2026, 07:19 | Written by Best Fit

David Byrne's latest playlist sees the prolific artist and music lover digging deep into Latin psych.

David Byrne Radio Presents: Latin Psychedelic includes 48 songs that take in the likes of Khruganbin, Angélica Garcia, Tom Zé, Rita Lee and Os Mutantes.

"Wow, this playlist could have been much much longer," wrote Byrne in a note accompanying the playlist. "I barely scratched the surface. Maybe I should do part 2 in the future. In North America and UK, most of the focus on psychedelic songs went to Beatles, Cream, Hendrix, Grateful Dead, etc. But, there was a LOT going on south of the border too."

Byrne made the playlist after hearing a lot of new Latin psychedelic music at the Kitchen In The Desert restaurant during his two dates at Coachella. "We were parked in 29 Palms in order to play Coachella, which is relatively close," he writes. "Hotels near the festival were crazy expensive- so we stayed in a hotel made of shipping containers right near Joshua Tree. On days off, we went to a place called Kitchen In The Desert. The food is wonderful and the chef/owner does the playlists... That sent me down a rabbit hole to make a playlist using some songs that I was familiar with already, some of the music we heard at the restaurant, and some other stuff that popped up in my search."

Byrne has been posting playlists on mixcloud for over a decade - check out the archive at mixcloud.com/Todomundo. Byrne's Who Is The Sky global tour continues with US dates this month and festival dates including Roskilde, Open'er, Down the Rabbit Hole, Mad Cool and Latitude across the summer.
