Yothu Yindi frontman Mandawuy Yunupingu passes away at 56

Aboriginal Australian musician and leader of indigenous crossover band Yothu Yindi, Mandawuy Yunupingu has died – age 56.

The musician, one of the country’s most famous Aborigines, was voted Australian of the Year in 1992. The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, confirmed Yunupingu’s death – passing away on Sunday night (2 June) at his home in the Northern Territory.

“We have lost a uniquely talented musician, a passionate advocate for Aboriginal people and a truly great friend,” Prime Minister Julia Gillard said in a statement released publicly on Monday.

Yothu Yindi are best known for their 1991 hit ‘Treaty’, which you can listen to below.
