Warpaint’s new Ted Newsome-directed video is a dark and mysterious one that finds the Warpaint women escape a monochrome urban landscape for a brightly coloured underwater paradise. As ‘Warpaint’ the track becomes hazier, fuzzier and more multi-layered, so the images become more hallucinogenic. In the spirit of Alice and Wonderland, a direct homage to which could be seen in the tea-party scene – their equivalent of ‘down the rabbit hole’ is an exciting, but garish place that is as mysterious as it is beautiful, and not without a sense of danger.
It’s an ambitious and beautifully executed visual accompaniment to the track, and one that has been a long time coming apparently, the band saying: “We’ve always had the idea to do a video underwater, and were excited when our friend Ted Newsome sent us a treatment, which involved just that. It was an opportunity to create a fantastical world where oxygen, time and style were simply not an issue. Turned out to be far more challenging than we had initially expected, but we pulled through. We’re excited about it and hope you enjoy.”
‘Warpaint’ is from Warpaint’s debut LP The Fool, which was released last year via Rough Trade.
