Already established as one of the most consistently intriguing folk acts currently working, Mark Charles Heidinger’s latest video reflects the same conflicts, the haunting tensions and the ethereal beauty his music (as Vandaveer) does.
Taken from current release Dig Down Deep, Vandaveer’s third LP, ‘The Great Gray’ contains an otherworldly soundscape, Heidinger’s inimitable vocals drifting across it. Loic Guilpain’s video is filled with a similar uncanniness; a gas-masked musician navigating an abandoned house, collecting seemingly valueless relics as spectral sunlight creeps into every room. Just as Heidinger’s wonderful, if maudlin, lyrics handle the ever-cheery topic of death, so too the video for ‘The Great Gray’ has a captivating, ghostly feel to it: the final reveal of why our protagonist is collecting these oddities is unsettling, married with the final lyrics “death is here”.
