Watch Marlon Williams cover Sandy Denny live in session for Best Fit
Hot on the heels of supporting Lorde on her Solar Power tour in the UK and Europe, New Zealand singer/songwriter Marlon Williams has covered Sandy Denny's "It'll Take A Long Time" live in session exclusively for The Line of Best Fit in partnership with The Foundry/Crouch End Studios.
Speaking about his song choice, Williams told Best Fit, "I first heard that song as a live version from 1972 with Sandy and the Fairport Convention playing it at The Troubadour, and I must’ve been about 11 or 12 when I heard it. First of all Sandy’s just got one of the most incredible voices ever, and I’ve always been really attracted to songs about the sea."
"I just think it’s my favourite album as a concept album about seagoing," Williams continued. "So many of my favourite songs have used the sea, the fretful sailor metaphor. It’s such a powerful lyric and it’s a simple song with a weird key change - it goes up and then goes down and goes up and goes down again - there’s not much to it but has infinite depth at the same time."
Last week Williams released "River Rival", the third single from his forthcoming album My Boy. My Boy will follow 2020's Plastic Boquet collaborative album with Kacy & Clayton, and will be his first solo album since 2018's Make Way for Love.
He'll play London's KOKO on 26 October. Visit marlonwilliams.co.nz for tickets.
