Benjamin John Power of Fuck Buttons released his debut full-length solo effort under the moniker Blanck Mass yesterday on Rock Action records. He also revealed the video for ‘Icke’s Struggle’, a track from said album in which an Eden hewn of polystyrene melts away under ‘acid rain’ within an absorbing swell of ambient electronica. In a beautifully clear metaphor for the music itself we see something man-made, convincingly imitating natural life in a manner that feels very organic. Similarly Blanck Mass’ electronic sounds create an artificial landscape that fosters emotion and human-feeling far more than many more ‘human’ acoustic sounds would be able.
A beautiful simplicity lies at the heart of the video concept, and this reflects the apparent minimalism of the slow moving track. The contrast between the sharply silhouetted dark shapes of the ‘plants’ against the psychedelic background gradually becomes less pronounced as the solid objects begin to melt, and similarly, over the duration, the track itself becomes deeper, darker and denser.
