Track By Track: BEAU on That Thing Reality
New York City's BEAU release debut LP That Thing Reality today, and have explained each track in detail for us.
The 21-year-old duo - Heather Boo and Emma Rose - combine mature songwriting with gorgeous acoustic folk-pop melodies. Instead of relying on gimmicky bells and whistles, BEAU rely on their own strength as musicians - if you're into what First Aid Kit do, these two are worth a long hard listen.
Al O'Connell (aka alalal - Mark Ronson, Rufus Wainwright) has helped produced That Thing Reality, which follows their 2015 self-titled EP.
Stream "Sweet Lips" from the album below, and read the Track By Track guide from Boo and Rose after.
That Thing Reality
That Thing Reality is a testament to our youth and perpetual uncertainty in our teenage years. This album is our first album ever released so it feels like a milestone for us. When anyone is creative and creates something physical, it is extremely rewarding.
C’mon Please
The verse and chorus of "C'Mon Please" was written in our bedroom late at night with a bottle of wine and a diary at our side, and then the bridge was written in Nashville during our time recording in the studio. This song wasn't exactly intended to be a dance song but we are glad that it turned into one (kinda)! We feel that it brings good energy to the album.
Jane Hotel
This was written during the deepest heartbreak. It is a 'first love' kind of song, depicting a time when I found my first true love. The feeling of laying eyes on him for the first time needed to be written down.
Mosquito
"Mosquito" was inspired by a kind of gypsy-folk kinda feel. Heather really brought all of her energy in the studio when we were working on this song and we wanted to make sure we had a good mixture of acoustic guitars and electrics; we even added some nylon strings in there.
One Wing
This song took quite a while to write, in comparison to some of the other songs on the album, which came quickly and naturally. This song took some effort especially in the songwriting process, which we feel made it all the better. We are also really happy with the production of this song, and with the overall feeling of the vocals and guitars.
Animal Kingdom
"Animal Kingdom" is one of our most fun songs. It talks a lot about imagery and environment. When we were in the studio we knew we wanted to keep the song upbeat and dancey. This song is about loving the environment and all the animals within it.
Oceans
Probably the oldest song on the album, "Oceans" was written when we were a mere 13 years old. It encompasses the wide imagination youth in New York can have, and the deep love for humanities relationship with Mother Nature.
Leave Me Be
"Leave Me Be" started out mostly as an instrumental and then we added vocals later on. It's one of our favorite songs that we've ever written mostly because we feel it's dynamic and has changes that we like. We didn't realize how the song can sound pretty paranoid, regarding the lyrics... that definitely wasn't intentional! Haha.
Roam
"Roam" is another oldie that we wrote when we were about 15. We never knew how exactly to finish the song, but one night at friends house in Upstate New York we were sitting on the grass by a fire on a moonlit night and singing the unfinished version. We toyed around with a few different melodies and then suddenly remembered one of our ideas from a while back, and we played it and everyone around us and they were convinced that should be the part - this part I'm referring to is the laughing bit at the end.
Sweet Lips
There's a lightheartedness to this song that we love and wanted to maintain. It was inspired by a '60s groove and we really just fell in love with the opening riff, and then the rest of the song blossomed from there.
Soar across the sea
"Soar Across The Sea" is a song that came through us pretty naturally. It's one of the only songs on this album that begins with bass and drums, which we love. At first we wrote this song as a love song which started out kind of slow and emotional, but then we got into the studio and felt inspired to make it a bit more edgy with some trebley guitars and intense vocals.
Sleep Deprived
"Sleep Deprived" is a really sentimental song to us both. It's mainly about heartbreak and how it can affect someone on multiple levels, be it spiritual, mental, or physical. We weren't particularly tired when we wrote it ;)
Lullaby
This song is kind of a love triangle between the guitar, the voice and the lyrics. We paid attention to every strum of the guitar and every word when recording this song. We are the most happy with how this song came to be.
