The original artwork for Sufjan Stevens' The Age Of Adz is up for auction
Royal Robertson's artwork for Sufjan Stevens' record The Age Of Adz is being auctioned off - and if you've got a few grand to spare, it could be yours!
"This drawing is in good environmental condition, but the work is delicate and lightly weathered." reads the seller's accompanying note. "There are minor stains, small holes, light fading, natural wear and tear, and a small missing piece on the upper right hand corner (see detail photos). Prophet Royal Robertson exhibited his drawings on the walls inside his home and on the front of his house using nails. They were often intentionally exposed to the elements and not kept in pristine condition, which is the case with much of the artwork created by self-taught individuals."
Robertson, a self-proclaimed prophet from Louisiana who died in 1997, was a major inspiration on Stevens' 2010 album. As well as using Robertson's art on the cover, Stevens "incorporated imagery by the self-taught artist... [and] also used the artist’s life story as the conceptual springboard for the album’s narrative."
Titled The Visionary Drawing No. 8, the work is believed to have been created in 1978. This is the first time it's been available in a public sale.
