Thai restaurant “Thai, How Are You?” opens next to famous Daniel Johnston mural
An Asian restaurant has opened next to the iconic Daniel Johnston mural in Austin, aptly named “Thai, How Are You?”.
The mural, displaying the artwork to the lo-fi songwriter’s classic album Hi, How Are You?, used to be situated on the side of a cafe called Thai Spice. The recent name change, however, came when new owners took over the restaurant.
“I didn’t know the history, and my wife certainly didn’t know the history. I had seen the mural and thought it was just one of those interesting quirks about Austin. Only while we were there and saw the attention that it gets every day did it start to pique my interest,” said David Roberts, who recently bought the property.
Roberts goes on to tell the Austin Chronicle that he intends to make no changes to the original mural artwork.
