Teacher suspended for studying Lil Wayne lyrics in English class syllabus
School seems far more exciting now than back in the day. There’s classes you can take on Bruce Springsteen, Kanye West and Jay Z and now one English teacher has started setting Lil Wayne lyrics as homework assignments.
As WPTV report, an 8th grade teacher at South Flordia’s Charter School of Boynton Beach angered parents when he asked kids to study the words to Lil Wayne’s “6 Foot 7 Foot”, urging them to find “examples of figurative language” among the expletives.
Headmaster Wayne Owens said of the matter: “The lesson was for students to learn to identify literary devices. The teacher had already introduced Edgar Allen Poe and Shakespeare. Students were having difficulty grasping the concepts of literary devices such as: pun, simile, metaphor, so the teacher used colloquial material. This material did not meet the school’s standards and was not approved. The teacher recognizes that it was totally inappropriate for a school assignment.”
