Sony release 64,750,000-track capacity cassette tape
Thought the cassette tape was long dead? Well, despite some youngsters having never seen a Sony Walkman before, ventures like Cassette Store Day have meant that - just like vinyl - the humble tape has found its niche too.
Now, over two decades since the invention of the cassette, Sony have released a cassette tape capable of storing 185 TB of data and 64,750,000 songs - that’s 8,093,750 days of music. We bet Apple are already holding crisis talks over the future of the iPod.
As Gizmodo report: “the tape uses a vacuum-forming technique called sputter deposition to create a layer of magnetic crystals by shooting argon ions at a polymer film substrate. The crystals, measuring just 7.7 nanometers on average, pack together more densely than any other previous method”.
The product was unveiled at the International Magnetics Conference in Dresden over the weekend. More details are expected to emerge shortly.
