Sóley announces Mother Melancholia concept album with new single "Sunrise Skulls"
Icelandic musician Sóley has shared news of her forthcoming concept album Mother Melancholia, and has released new single "Sunrise Skulls" to accompany the announcement.
"Sunrise Skulls" is Sóley's first new material since collaborating with Sin Fang and Örvar Smárason on "Lake With No Name" last week, and is teamed with news of Mother Melancholia, Sóley's new concept album.
The new song was inspired by the #MeToo and SlutWalk movements, and is accompanied by a Samantha Shay-directed video.
Mother Melancholia will follow last year's Harmóník I & II compilation, and is described by the Icelandic musician as "Nosferatu meets Thelma and Louise in a vampire church under the watchful eye of David Lynch."
Speaking about the recording process, Sóley explained, "I bought myself a theremin as I was really excited about the unpitched sound and there is no perfect pitch during the end of days. I also bought a mellotron, my first moog and a cello and taught myself how to play each of them. All of these new instruments are particularly suitable for the kinds of aesthetic inconveniences which I have learned to embrace."
"I hope that people not only enjoy the new sound, but also that Mother Melancholia might raise some questions in people, particularly women," Sóley adds. "I’m under no illusion that this album will change the world but I hope that people can connect with the idea."
