Sir Rod Stewart unveils model railway city that he's spent 26 years building
Sir Rod Stewart choo-choo-chooses to let off steam by dedicating 26 years of his life to building a model railway city.
Today, Sir Rod S-choo-wart has unveiled that his 'tunnel vision' has been focused to building a model railway city for the past 26 years.
In the time that Stewart has spent building his railway city (which is a design based on New York and Chicago around 1945), he has managed to release 13 studio albums, and has been on 19 tours (not by train though).
As BBC notes, Stewart's model railway city was revealed in an interview with Railway Modeller magazine. BBC Radio 2 host Jeremy Vine questioned whether the singer had built the city himself, to which Stewart phoned in and replied, "I would say 90% of it I built myself. The only thing I wasn't very good at and still am not is the electricals, so I had someone else do that."
In his interview with Railway Modeller, the singer revealed that he built skyscrapers and some of the scenery while on tour, and had to request an extra room just for his constructions, "We would tell them in advance and they were really accommodating, taking out the beds and providing fans to improve air circulation and ventilation."
The end result is quite staggering, but many must be thinking, why doesn't he change his "Sailing" song to favour his hobby?
Discussing the huge project that spanned over two decades, Stewart says, "When I take on something creative like this, I have to give it 110%. For me it's addictive. I started, so I just had to finish. I'm lucky I had the room. If I'd have realised at the start it would have taken so long, I'd have probably said, No! No! Nah!"
If Stewart was looking to do a new video for his cover of Tom Waits' "Downtown Train", the musician has already got the location sorted.
