Sexwitch played their first gig last night at London's XOYO
Sexwitch is the combined forces of Bat For Lashes’ Natasha Khan, Toy and producer Dan Carey, born out of Carey acting as a producer for each act.
They've only just over half a dozen songs to their name, all covers of traditional songs from Morocco, Iran and Thailand among other places. Every piece they’ve created is showcased in 40 minutes of contained mystical energy at their first London gig at XOYO (29th September).
Khan induces overwhelming cheers as she walks on stage; but the chemistry with her collaborators is also fathomable as they start proceedings with “Ghoroobaa Ghashangan”, smiling most of the way through.
“Heylelos”’ spiritual energy is Khan in full-on Bat mode as she swerves around the stage, whereas a song like “The Bride” (the first tune they wrote together) showcases Toy's psychedelic musicality. There are one or two technical hiccups between songs, though its understandable being one of their first gigs.
As Khan declares the end is nigh before seventh and final song “Kassidat El Hakka” – a slow build of drums and twangy riff – she admits she would be “knackered” if they kept playing. They only have over half a dozen songs to their name, after all, and clearly given tonight’s brief but powerful triumph, they desperately need more.
