See a map of America showing the most popular musician in each state
Some musical mathematicians have been conducting surveys and polls of which acts and artists are more popular in some states of America compared to others, coming up with some interesting findings.
Paul Lamere of The Echo Nest has penned the article in question for Music Machinery, exploring regional listening preferences. Rather than showing the most popular bands and singers in each state (which would pretty much read Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift throughout), Lamere has tried to show what acts are most popular in individual states as compared to other ones.
For example, James Blake is listened to far more often in New York than he is elsewhere. Likewise, Rick Ross appears quite popular in Miami. Some other interesting picks are Kurt Vile for Oregon, The Shins in Missouri, Tegan & Sara in Idaho and Sufjan Stevens for Illinois (presumably because he wrote an entire album about the place).
