Russia allowed to participate in this year's Eurovision Song Contest

Eurovision Song Contest organisers have confirmed that Russia will be allowed to participate in this year's event despite Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

BBC reports that organisers described Eurovision as a "non-political cultural event which unites nations and celebrates diversity through music", and added that they are "currently planning" to host contestants from both Russia and Ukraine at the May event.

Organisers also said they "will continue to monitor the situation closely."

According to Sky News, Ukrainian state broadcaster UA:PBC has urged the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to suspend Russia from the 2022 contest. UA:PBC said yesterday (24 February) that Russian broadcasters have been a "mouthpiece for the Kremlin" and a "key tool of political propaganda" to assist in the "systematic dissemination of disinformation" against Ukraine.

The 2022 Eurovision Song Contest final will take place in Turin, Italy on 14 May.
