Rihanna wins £3 million lawsuit over unauthorised Topshop t-shirt
Popstar, Rihanna has triumphed in her legal battle against high-street retailers Topshop over an unauthorised t-shirt that she claims encroaches on her “brand identity”.
The singer sued the company for $5 million (£3.3m) after they sold an item depicting an image similar to her Talk That Talk album artwork.
The photo in question was taken by a freelance photographer on one of Rihanna’s video shoots and sold to Topshop thereafter. The case brings to light the ambiguity in law between those that own the rights to photographs and those depicted in within them.
The judge finally deemed that the photo was too similar to the original LP cover and gained to profit from Rihanna, who has a clothing line with rival firm River Island.
