Pussy Riot members to appeal Russian Supreme Court hearing
Two of the imprisoned members of the female-fronted punk group Pussy Riot, convicted on charges of ‘hooliganism,’ are set to appeal their case before the Supreme Court in Russia.
While no official date for the appeal is set, they will maintain the defense that their conviction was ‘illegal.’
The two members of note, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, are currently serving two year sentences for their involvement in an anti-Putin demonstration at an Orthodox cathedral in Moscow. Footage of their demonstration was made into a music video set to their song “Punk Prayer — Mother of God, Chase Putin Way!!” (see below).
A third member, Yekaterina Samutsevich, had her sentence suspended after her lawyer successfully argued that she had not reached the altar before being seized by security guards.
While the band hasn’t blazed too many trails of their own in music, a few who have—including Madonna and Paul McCartney—have come to their defense.
