Pulp's “Common People” voted “favourite Britpop Anthem” by BBC 6 Music listeners
Marking 20 years since the genre’s foundations, BBC Radio 6 Music celebrated “Britpop Week” this week, with its listeners voting Pulp’s “Common People” as their all-time favourite “Britpop Anthem”.
Steve Lamacq announced the track, which reached #2 in the UK charts back in 1995, as the winner on his show earlier, pipping the likes of Blur’s “Parklife”, Oasis’ “Wonderwall” and The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony” to the top spot.
“It is one of the defining records of Britpop because it seemed to embrace the essence of the time so perfectly. It was a big, bold anthem, but with a great narrative,” Lamacq said of the song. “It seemed to sum up a feeling of ‘us and them’, as if to illustrate how the indie mavericks had taken on the pop stars and for once they’d won.”
