Portishead's Geoff Barrow unhappy at The Weeknd sampling their track in new single
Earlier today, R&B lothario The Weeknd unveiled his rather epic new video for ‘Belong To The World’. The track itself is rather epic too, featuring a sample of Portishead’s ‘Machine Gun’.
One rather notable person isn’t a fan, however, with the Bristol band’s own Geoff Barrow taking to Twitter to reveal that he refused an approach from Tesfaye to sample the track. Abel, it appears, went ahead and used it regardless of clearance.
Barrow wrote on Twitter earlier:
@pitchforkmedia @theweeknd when someone asks to sample you and you refuse they should have the respect as a fellow artist to not use it.

It’s not about money though, Barrow says, he just doesn’t like the track:
@pitchforkmedia @theweeknd I think it's a load of bollox

We usually give sample clearance to tunes we like. its got fuk all to do with money! As most of them are hiphop artist that are skint.
