Parents Television Council complain about “raunchiness” of MTV VMAs
This year’s MTV Video Music Awards has been largely hailed by viewers as the best for sometime. It has also been labelled as “sexually exploitative” by campaigners.
As Rolling Stone report, non-profit organisation the Parents Television Council have criticised MTV for the broadcast, stating that it was unsuitable for its PG-14 rating.
“This much is absolutely clear: MTV marketed adults-only material to children while falsely manipulating the content rating to make parents think the content was safe for their children,” a statement from the group reads.
It continues: “MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate ‘twerking’ in a nude-colored bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds?”
In particular, the aforementioned performance by Miley Cyrus, as well as that of Lady Gaga’s, have caused the most uproar. Curiously, though, Miley’s own father Billy Ray Cyrus serves on the board of the Council.
Here’s a selection of the best reactions of Miley’s contentious performance:
