No, Depeche Mode aren't the "official band of the alt-right"
Despite what you may have heard, Depeche Mode are definitely not the official band of the alt-right.
White nationalist punching bag Richard Spencer said that "Depeche Mode is the official band of the alt-right" during an interview New York Mag's Olivia Nuzzi - he was responding to an audience member asking him "if he liked rock music".
The band have released a statement denying all ties, with a spokesman telling Esquire: "That’s pretty ridiculous. Depeche Mode has no ties to Richard Spencer or the alt-right and does not support the alt-right movement."
Spencer has since said he was being serious, although as NME note he's claimed in the past that progressive anthem "People Are People" is actually about "racial differences" and that the electronic legends have "already written all the anthems the #AltRight needs".
