Nico Muhly explains his response to The Wilton Diptych for the Soundscapes exhibition
The National Gallery kicked off its stunning Soundscapes exhibition last month, featuring the likes of Jamie xx and Gabriel Yared.
Nico Muhly is another major musical force that's provided sounds for the exhibition. Inspired by The Wilton Diptych (1395-9, unknown artist), Muhly wrote "Long Phrases For The Wilton Diptych", and in this exclusive video, he explains just how he went about responding to the art and creating the musical companion. It's a fascinating glimpse into the inner machinations of contemporary classical's brightest minds.
The National Gallery's Soundscapes series is open daily until 6 September - you can grab tickets now. A range of artists have created music for artwork in the gallery, and you can only hear their works at the gallery itself - it will not be shown elsewhere.
