Dayve Hawk, the man who led the chillwave vanguard and then transcended it, is set to release Player Piano, his second album as Memory Tapes, on 4 July.
Memory Tapes’ debut, Seek Magic, remains one of the touchstone records of the final part of the last decade. Presumably thinking it makes little sense to mess with a formula that yielded 30,000 sales worldwide, Hawk has made the follow-up in the same environment – his New Jersey home studio.
According to Hawk, Player Piano takes its queues from “keyboard-based psychedelic girl-group songs” and favours “drums that sound like The Kinks’ ’60s records” over programmed beats.
The album will see a European release through Something In Construction, and Hawk will be debuting it live over the summer. Stream ‘Today Is Our Life’, a song that will appear on Player Piano but in different form, below.
