Leeds Cockpit to close doors after 20 years
Due to reasons beyond their control, the Cockpit are forced to close their doors. It looks as if the structural integrity of the actual venue itself has been a deciding factor. It’s a sad bit of news that an iconic establishment, championing new music and bands, who’ve had Bloc Party, Coldplay and The White Stripes grace their stage, is to close.
The venue has issued a statement on their website:
It is with great regret that we have to announce the permanent closure of the Cockpit. After 20 great years as an integral pillar of the Leeds music scene we have decided that it is no longer viable to deliver you the level of service you deserve with the building in it’s current condition.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank every one of you who came to watch your favourite bands, danced, stage dived, crowd surfed, found your life partner and gave the Cockpit its reputation as one of the best live music venues in the UK.
All gigs have been rescheduled, or are in the process of being moved to other locations. The Cockpit also announced a new venue, Slam Dunk, in the city. It will open 20 September on Merrion Street.
