Kanye West's non-profit Donda's House offers free creative programmes for Chicago youth

Kanye West might be a bundle of narcissism and unrelenting ego most of the time but occasionally he kinds capacity for the contrary. The charity set up by West in honour of his late mother Donda recently announced a programme of lessons on writing and recording music for Chicago’s ‘at-risk’ youth.

Non-profit Donda’s House is behind the “Got Bars?” initiative, which operates out of St. Sabina’s Church. Topics of health and wellness will also be addressed with former pro-football player and executive director of the organisation Donnie Smith as lead.

In an interview with Jet, Smith says, “We think that 15 to 24-year-olds…they are in the most need of help. We want to get kids in high school, that young adult age range who are confused about where they are in life. We want to give them direction… so many people have just given up on that demographic. And I would add that Dr. Donda West was passionate about the high school dropout rate. We want to be working to help with that at the younger age of that spectrum.”

Yeezus collaborator and Donda’s House co-founder Rhymefest is one of the instructors. Students can enroll from now until 2 August.
