Kanye West to release single from Yeezus despite previously shunning radio
Kanye West’s new album, Yeezus, made it to the top spot in both the UK and U.S this week with minimal mainstream promotion. He had previously spoken in interview about how he purposely made an album that wasn’t radio-friendly, and yet now it seems like he will release a single for it after all – with a “clean version” of lead cut ‘Black Skinhead’.
Speaking to The New York Times prior to the record’s release, West said: “I would hear stories about Steve Jobs and feel like he was at 100 percent exactly what he wanted to do, but I’m sure even a Steve Jobs has compromised. Even a Rick Owens has compromised. You know, even a Kanye West has compromised. Sometimes you don’t even know when you’re being compromised till after the fact, and that’s what you regret.” Now, it indeed seems like even a Kanye West had compromised.
Billboard are reporting that an official video is also in the works for the song, with West’s label Def Jam Records confirming the news to the publication. “The video release and the track’s radio impact date will coincide, likely in time for the 4th of July holiday,” they say.
Instead of the normal marketing campaign, Kanye has opted more for a guerilla affair this time round, with video projections being set up around the world. The only traditional media he used was to perform on Saturday Night Live, premiering ‘New Slaves’ and the aforementioned ‘Black Skinhead’, the latter performance you can stream below.
