K-pop fans sabotage Trump's Tulsa rally by registering thousands of fake tickets
K-pop fans united once again for another politically-charged, digital sabotage over the weekend by registering for thousands of fake tickets for Donald Trump's Tulsa rally on Saturday (20 June).
The online fans have proved to be an ally for Black Lives Matter protesters in recent weeks, and over the weekend they ridiculed Donald Trump by disrupting his campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Trump held the rally on Saturday (20 June), and before the event, Trump boasted that a million people had registered for tickets. K-pop fans and TikTok users applied for thousands of tickets, with no intention of attending the event, leaving a large number of empty seats at the rally.
Cosmopolitan reports that despite the stadium having a 19,000 capacity, the Tulsa Fire Department only counted 6,200 attendees (not including staff).
The New York Times also notes that Trump's additional spaces set up for excess attendees were cancelled as the crowds didn't turn up.
One organiser told the NYT, "It spread mostly through Alt TikTok - we kept it on the quiet side where people do pranks and a lot of activism. K-pop Twitter and Alt TikTok have a good alliance where they spread information amongst each other very quickly. They all know the algorithms and how they can boost videos to get where they want."
New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez applauded the K-pop fans and TikTokers for their work on Twitter while responding to Donald Trump's campaign manager Brad Parscale, "Actually you just got ROCKED by teens on TikTok who flooded the Trump campaign w/ fake ticket reservations & tricked you into believing a million people wanted your white supremacist open mic enough to pack an arena during COVID."
