Jennifer Paige praises Jai Paul's cover of 'Crush'
Last weekend, XL Recordings’ most elusive musician Jai Paul seemingly dropped his long-awaited debut album as a mixtape via a mysterious Bandcamp, only for it to be announced days later that what people paid £7 for was actually an “illegal leak”. Speculation ensued online, with many citing claims of a stolen laptop, while others saw it as an intentional ploy by Jai Paul to either gain publicity from the leak or to go rogue without his label.
With many still searching for answers, some internet types have killed some time by making some mock t-shirts with a head-nod to another leak coming from Daft Punk. The guys over at Complex, however, have decided to use their time to contact the original artist behind one of release’s highlights, a cover of Jennifer Paige’s 1998 hit ‘Crush’, with Paige having the following to say in response:
“I’m definitely flattered that he likes the song enough to record his own version. With that said, I’m slightly partial to the Original version. Since Jai Paul recreated the track/vocals, it doesn’t surprise me that my approval wasn’t necessary. must be some creative genius trying to stump the world on this one. I wish Jai Paul tons of success with his new (non-release) release.”
While the original collection of what now seem to be stolen demos has been removed from Bandcamp, you can still listen to the aforementioned cover of ‘Crush’ streaming via Youtube below. The promised “full statement” from Jai Paul is still yet to surface.
