Jay-Z uses beat made by little known Canadian teen producer on new album
Last night, Hudson Mohawke took to Twitter to bemoan Jay-Z’s lack of risk-taking on his new album, citing Hov’s preference to stick to the old head producers in the game. He obviously didn’t read that one of credits on Magna Carta Holy Grail cites a virtually-unknown 16 year old bedroom producer from near Toronto.
Ebony Oshunrinde, aka WondaGurl, receives a production credit on ‘Crown’. The beat found its way to the hip-hop star after Oshunrinde sent it to G.O.O.D Music signee and Jay-Z collaborator Travis Scott, who she had recently met and appears on said track.
Scott had been working in the studio with Jay on Magna Carta when he played him the beat, later texting the young upstart to tell her Jay liked it and was interested in using it. “He texted me and said, ‘I’m about to change your life’,” she recently told local paper The Star. “Usually that doesn’t really happen to 16-year-olds.”
Despite her raised stock, Oshunrinde hasn’t yet met her newly-instated mentor and still had to wait until the album’s 4 July release date to hear her appearance on the finished piece. The guest spot has, however, opened her career up to some higher profile collaborations, she says.
