Jay-Z asks Courtney Love for permission to use Nirvana lyrics on new album
With Jay-Z’s surprise new album coming in just two weeks time, we’re being drip-fed more and more info about Magna Carta Holy Grail - with it now emerging that the rapper re-appropriates Nirvana lyrics on the LP.
The borrowed lines come from the grunge band’s breakthrough hit ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, Kurt Cobain’s former wife and widow Courtney Love says.
“I’m letting Jay-Z use lyrics– Frances would freak ,” Love recently told Huffington Post. “Jay-Z’s huge and we’re friends. I mean we’re not besties or anything.”
The rapper originally failed to contact either Love or the others in charge of Cobain’s estate, but now all financial matters have been agreed she says. “They without asking, which is kind of nervy but the business side has been taken care of so it’s fine.”
Magna Carta Holy Grail, said to feature the likes of Pharrell, Timbaland and Rick Rubin, will be released on 4 July via a Samsung smartphone app. It’ll then be available to the wider public physically.
