J Dilla's uncle to open donut shop in Detroit
What better way to celebrate late hip-hop producer J Dilla and his last, and great, release Donuts than to open up a shop in his hometown selling the very pastry treats themselves?
That’s exactly what Dilla’s uncle, Herman Hayes, is doing for his deceased nephew. Hayes, a former baker, will launch a venture in Detroit called Dilla’s Delights later this year, planning to open the store in either October or December.
As Pitchfork note, Hayes himself used to bring his famous relative donuts when he was a child. “He was on his deathbed making Donuts, and I felt like that was partly a tribute to me. I felt I should honor that and respect that and give back to him.”
The store will be soundtracked by Dilla vinyl, as well as that of artists the producer admired and sampled.
