J. Cole moves album release date forward to challenge Kanye West
German-born American rapper, J. Cole has brought his new album due date forward a week in a call of arms to Kanye West.
West’s preposterously-named Yeezus is set to come out on 18 June in the States, with Cole’s effort Born Sinner previously expected a week later. That all changed once he found out Yeezy had a new record on the way, however.
“I’m not going to sit … I worked too hard to come a week later after Kanye West drops an amazing album,” Cole said on the news. “It’d be like, ‘Oh and J.Cole dropped too, a week later.’ Nah. I’m going to go see him on that date. He’s the greatest. So it’s like, I’m a competitor by nature so it was instant, it wasn’t even a thought.”
It’s not the first time Kanye’s been caught up in a beef of this kind either, back in 2007 50 Cent bet West that he’d sell more albums with Curtis than Graduation did. Fiddy ended up eating his words and losing the bet.
