Hudson Mohawke says Jay-Z turned down his beats for new album

Hudson Mohawke is of the Rick Rubin school of thought, it seems, in thinking that Jay-Z’s much-hyped new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, isn’t as progressive or daring as Kanye West’s equally-if-not-more-so-hyped new record.

The Glaswegian producer took to Twitter last night (4 July) to give his take on the LP, which is currently streaming online after being released early via a Samsung Galaxy smartphone app.

In a series of tweets, Hud Mo revealed that the hip-hop stars passed on using his beats for the album, opting for old head Timbaland instead. “Hov is not quite ready,” the electronic musician said, having released been praised for his production work on Yeezus. “Ye on the other hand unafraid to take risks”.

After, predictably, experiencing a bit of a backlash to his words, Mohawke qualified them by saying that while a fan of Jay-Z, that the record didn’t add anything to the future sound of the genre, arguing that it “could’ve came out 10 yrs ago no one would’ve batted an eye lid”.

Mohawke’s words seem in line with Def Jam founder and uber-producer, Rick Rubin, who recently called Magna Carta a “more traditional hip-hop record” than Yeezus, saying it was hard for him to listen to it after sessions with Kanye as he was in a “very alternative and progressive headspace” at the time.

Meanwhile, in more positive news, Hudson Mohawke has also confirmed his involvement with the new Pusha T album, saying that he was “about to finish” it shortly.
